Black-eyed peas and collard greens ensure luck in the coming year.

Southern tradition demands that you eat black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day for good luck in the upcoming year. In this menu for eight, we’ve paired them with other good-luck New Year’s foods, including pork belly, collard greens, cornbread, oysters, and a ring-shaped pound cake.

Menu Timeline

One Day aAhead:

  • Make the black-eyed peas for the pork belly. Cover and refrigerate.
  • Roast the pork belly, cool to room temperature, and refrigerate.
  • Bake the pound cake and glaze when completely cool. Cover the cake and store at room temperature.

Two Hours Ahead:

  • Make the collard greens.
  • Make the remoulade for the oysters.

One Hour Ahead:

  • Bake the cornbread.

20 Minutes Ahead:

  • Dredge and fry the oysters.
  • Glaze and reheat the pork belly.
