Blackberry-Sage Water

Scott Phillips

Yield:Yields 2 quarts

Servings:8

The idea here is a DIY flavored water: healthier and less expensive than those enhanced waters you see at the supermarket. In this version, sage adds complexity to deep, dark blackberry purée

Preparation

  • Put the sage leaves and sugar in a small pot and crush the leaves with a wooden spoon. Pour in the boiling water and stir until the sugar dissolves. Set aside to steep and cool for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, in a blender, purée the blackberries with 2 cups cold water. Strain the blackberry liquid and sage liquid through a fine strainer into a large bowl; discard the solids. Pour the liquid into a large pitcher. Add 5 cups cold water and stir to combine. Serve over ice.

Exactly as described! Not a juice but more of a "water essence" of blackberries and sage. For those who want it sweeter you could add honey or a simple syrup. I think a little lime juice would have been a nice touch. Everyone who had it really liked it and found it refreshing. A nice change from just water, filled with all sorts of antioxidants.

Excellent drink for a hot summer's day! I made this drink for a summer gathering along with the watermelon-basil water recipe. The adults loved it...the kids did not. The flavoring is more subtle in this water than the watermelon-basil water yet is incredibly refreshing. It puts the store-bought waters to shame. If you're looking for something the kids will also love, check out the watermelon-basil water.
